Former star athlete honored by NC Senate
N.C. Sen. Lisa Barnes, R-11th District, found herself inspired by N.C. Wesleyan University graduate Gregor Baum’s accomplishments since the German immigrant arrived in Rocky Mount in August 2021. Baum had his heart set on honing his skills as a soccer player for the Battling Bishops and taking his dream of playing professional soccer as far his talent allowed.
A month later, Baum suffered a career-ending back injury. Baum subsequently began to suffer from depression as a result of no longer being able to compete. But Baum reached out for help and took advantage of the mental health resources at the university, began to heal and found a new calling, helping others to learn to cope with the disappointment in their lives and find renewed hope.
Rocky Mount Mayor Sandy Roberson held a reception for Baum at his office in Rocky Mount last month to celebrate Baum’s commendation from the N.C. Senate.
