City wants section of U.S. 64 to be renamed for Landis

The City Council signed off Monday on a resolution requesting the state Transportation Department name U.S. 64 at Church Street for the late Kel Landis III, a Rocky Mount native who had been a former regional bank chief executive and a one-time economic adviser to a North Carolina governor.

Roberson said that given the state transportation board’s next meeting is next month and that Landis’ mother is 94 and would like to see the honoring of her late son occur, the part about having signage with Kel Landis III’s name along U.S. 64 was brought forward for the council’s consideration.

City Communications, Marketing and Publications Director Kirk Brown told the Telegram via email Tuesday that the request for naming the part of U.S. 64 in honor of Kel Landis III came from Roberson, who received the request from Landis family members.
